Grecia is just far enough off the beaten path to get away from frantic city life without giving up amenities and modern conveniences. In Grecia you can find both luxury and affordable properties and homes. Considered the Cleanest Town in Latin America, Grecia is a vibrant, charming, and peaceful community with neighbors who all keep an eye out for each other. Safety, cost of living, and spectacular views of San Jose and the Central Valley are major selling points in this area.

Centrally located on a volcanic mountain range with amazing views of the Central Valley there are five ridges above Grecia. Homes and property in this area often have valleys, mountains, and stunning nature views. On rare occasion property’s with 180º views come available often sporting larger homes or luxury properties. Investors can go more rural, consider properties in the suburbs, city or farmland. The variety in this area is especially unique. In addition to the amazing views, just a few minutes outside of town within a private reserve is a pair of beautiful waterfalls Las Cataratas de los Chorros, a pair of waterfalls always worth a visit.  

Cost of living is one of the lowest in Costa Rica. Still a farming town, consumable goods in Grecia are priced for residents, not tourists. Farmers still set up stalls at the farmer’s market each weekend with produce cheaper than in the US. Cleaning staff and gardeners are about a quarter of the cost compared to the U.S.

One look at a Grecia, Costa Rica Map and it is clear why finding a property in this area will pay off. On the edge of the Central Valley situated on the slope of Poás Volcano, it is surrounded by mountains. With the International airport 30 minutes away, San Jose in just under an hour, beaches within an hour and a half, waterfalls, and lakes local; you really cannot get a better spot. The local hotels which tend to be small, and Bed and Breakfast’s are thriving.  

Elevations for Grecia and its surrounding areas vary from 3,000 to 5,500 feet (about half the height of Mount St. Helens), providing spectacular panoramic views. There are five mountain ridges, Carbonal, San Isidro, El Cajon, San Miguel, and San Luis. Property and rentals are found scattered on the five roads leading to the ridges up the slope of Poas Volcano. Those roads run a little under 10 miles out of town. The coolest temperatures and best views are on the ridges and it is typical to find different communities on each. 


Roads in and around this area are easily travelable. In town roads, are narrow and get congested during rush hour. Even so, the easiest way to get around town in Grecia is to rent a car. This is because hotels, B&B’s, and lodging rentals are spread out around the outskirts of town. Consequently, there are no busses to many of these locations. Many times busses don’t run to the local attractions. For this reason if you live in or visit this area you want to own or rent a vehicle. From San Jose the drive to or from Grecia goes through the highway, the roads are paved in town. Waze or Google Maps works great to help navigate from San Jose to Grecia and back. 

Public Bus: Busses between Grecia and San Jose are reliable and run 10 minutes apart during rush hour and 30 minutes apart from 4:00 AM to 8:30 PM. The service operates in San Jose from 5:40 AM to 10:20 PM 


Grecia, Costa Ria weather averages around 75 during the day and usually about 50 overnight depending on elevation. Grecia has an altitude of between 3,000 and 5,500 feet, and mountains surround it. There are 5 main ridges with homes and communities overlooking the Central Valley. The ridges lead to the top of the Poas volcano. They host stunning views of San Jose and the Central Valley from most places in town. The weather is so pleasant year-round, consequently most homes in this area do not include a heater or air-conditioner. They are just not needed.

What’s the lifestyle and culture like in Grecia? 

Grecia Costa Rica real estate is a fantastic location for anyone who prefers to be immersed in Costa Rican culture. Here in Grecia you are far enough away from the frantic city life to relax. At the same time, close enough to not give up any luxuries you’ve become accustomed to. 

A medium-sized farming town of around 18,000 residents, it’s friendly and full of historic culture. The community has a beautiful central park with shopping and restaurants within walking distance. Thanks to the Poás Volcano there are five ridges with fantastic visas and the landscape has beautiful rolling hills. The fertile soil fuels the farming industry producing sugar, pineapple, and coffee. Grecia is proud to be one of the cleanest cities in Latin America.  

Grecia is on the Central Valley Tourist Route. Small enough to be friendly and inviting, Grecia’s quite rustic charm draws some of the nicest people.  This region will continue to see growth as people discover the clean, family-friendly community. 

You can find live entertainment in Grecia every weekend. Active people have ample options to hike and picnic. There are trails for every level, waterfalls to swim in, a volcano, and plenty of wildlife. For the civic-minded there are plenty of volunteer opportunities to give back to the community. One of the best in the Central Valley is Grecia’s feria, or farmers market. This is a great place to meet up with friends, listen to music, relax and shop for goods. 


One of the favorite attractions in Grecia is the church, Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Mercedes. Since the exterior of the church is red-painted prefabricated steel, it gets attention. Then the vaulted ceilings, ornate trim, and stained-glass windows, make this historic beauty a favorite treasure.

Adding to it’s charm, there are several urban legends about this church. First, one of the most well-known claims that a foreign country donated the church. The legend states that it was intended for Grecia, Greece, as a gift but was wrongly shipped to Grecia, Costa Rica. Then another legend states that the destination of the church was the city of Punta Arenas in Chile. According to this legend, however, it was disembarked in error at the port of Puntarenas, Costa Rica. Then, later, it was sent to the city of Grecia, where it was assembled.

However, while the stories are fun, the accurate history is that the church was built in the late 19th century. It was a joint effort of Grecia Canton (city), the Costa Rican government, the Catholic Church, and a coffee producer and exporter, Alejo E. Jiménez Bonnefil. With the dark red paint and brilliant white trim, it is one of the most unique and beautiful churches you will see. 

In the center of town across from Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Mercedes is Grecia’s central park. This is a community space where people visit and relax. There are often community performances on the bandstand and exotic birds that fly by. There are plenty of small shops and sodas scattered around the park. Additionally, they’ve built a children’s outdoor play area and event pavilion.
