What Is Labor Day and Why Is It Celebrated in Costa Rica?

Every May 1st, Costa Rica joins a global commemoration: The Costa Rican Labor Day, also known as International Workers’ Day. Beyond being a day off, this date represents a powerful history of labor struggles, social justice, and progress. At RE/MAX Costa Rica, we deeply value this day because we believe that dignified work is the foundation upon which homes, communities, and lifelong dreams are built in this beautiful country.

Costa Rican Labor Day

A Global Origin: The Fight for the 8-Hour Workday

Labor Day has its roots in the late 19th-century labor movement in the United States. On May 1, 1886, thousands of workers protested in Chicago, demanding an eight-hour workday. The protests led to clashes that became known as the Haymarket Affair, a pivotal event in labor history. In honor of their sacrifice, this date was adopted internationally as a symbol of workers’ rights.

The History of Labor Day in Costa Rica

Costa Rica began formally observing Labor Day in 1913, driven by labor unions and social organizations seeking greater equity for the working class. However, it was in 1943, under the administration of President Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia, that the date was officially declared a national holiday, solidifying its importance in Costa Rican law and culture.

Since then, May 1st has been a key moment for reflecting on labor advancements, social challenges, and honoring Costa Rican workers in every form.

Purpose: More Than Just a Day Off

Labor Day in Costa Rica serves several important purposes:

  • Recognition: To honor the effort and dedication of millions of workers across all sectors—from agriculture to tech, from tourism to real estate.
  • Social awareness: To remember that labor rights—fair wages, social security, dignified conditions—are the result of decades of struggle.
  • National unity: To promote a culture of respect, cooperation, and peace among employers, workers, and the state.
  • Civic education: Each year, this date also marks the official opening of the Legislative Assembly, making it a civic and democratic opportunity for the country.

Work and Property: A Meaningful Relationship

In real estate, work provides more than financial stability. It symbolizes personal growth, legacy building, and connection to the land. Buying property in Costa Rica is not just a financial transaction — it’s the result of years of effort and the start of a new life chapter.

At RE/MAX Costa Rica, we are proud to stand beside those who, through their hard work, seek a home to raise a family, a property to retire, or an investment to grow.

“Long Live Work and Peace!”

This traditional slogan of Costa Rica’s Labor Day sums up a national aspiration: that personal effort be joined with peaceful and supportive coexistence. In a country like Costa Rica, without a military and with a strong democratic spirit, work is also an act of citizenship.
