Located along the southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica, the Golfo Dulce is considered one of only four tropical fjords in the world. The curved inlet, located between the Osa Peninsula and the mainland, is approximately 50 kilometers long and 10 to 15 kilometers wide. It receives fresh water from four main rivers: Rincón, Esquinas, Tigre and Coto Colorado. The interior basin, of tectonic origin and occasionally anoxic, is more than 200 m deep and is contained by an effective threshold of around 60 meters that prevents free exchange with the Pacific water masses. Sediments in the Golfo Dulce already show anthropogenic contamination.
